Customer St Ewe is a finalist in Poultry Farmer of the Year award

Prestigious Farmers Weekly awards shortlist St Ewe Free Range Eggs

We are delighted to hear that Humphrey Feeds & Pullets’ customer St Ewe Free-Range Eggs, has been shortlisted as one of the final three contenders for Poultry Farmer of the Year 2022. The winner will be announced at the Farmers Weekly awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel Ballroom, in London’s Park Lane on 6th October.

St Ewe Free Range Eggs

Starting out as a family business in 2007, St Ewe has this year, moved to a new packing centre at Grampound Road, between Truro and St Austell in Cornwall. Both a packer and producer, St Ewe are accomplished in understanding what it takes to produce multi-award-winning eggs from both a production and packing perspective.

The packing side of the business can handle 300,000 eggs a day from farms across the South West and Wales, and supplies high quality free-range eggs to major supermarkets, local retailers, high end restaurants, hospitality and catering outlets.

The company’s home-farm at Ventowyn, Tregony, continues to farm free-range hens as well as buying eggs from its contracted farmers to use within its onsite pasteuriser and new packing centre.

Maintaining premium standards

St Ewe have been keeping free-range hens for more than 40 years and over that time have observed the effect of what a hen eats, on the quality of her eggs.

Humphrey Feeds & Pullets is St Ewe’s dedicated feed supplier and has worked closely with their team to combine their expertise and St Ewe’s experience, to develop special feeds that have helped St Ewe Free Range Eggs gain their tasty reputation.

St Ewe have a strong charitable ethos, donating to numerous causes.  Super Eggs benefit Pancreatic Cancer UK, online sales are donated to the British Red Cross’ activities in Ukraine, and they developed their Shell Out 2 Help Out (SO2HO) campaign, donating 300,000 eggs to local food banks and joining forces with the region's largest food redistribution charity, Fareshare Southwest.

Egg Innovation

St Ewe developed a brand, ‘Rich Yolk’, to produce eggs for chefs and foodies with rich, delicious tasting, deep orange yolks. The brand was developed in partnership with Humphrey Feeds, using the flock at St Ewe’s home farm for diet trials. They have also developed their latest brand, Super Eggs; eggs enhanced with DHA-Omega-3and organic selenium, which saw them scoop Innovation of The Year at the National Egg and Poultry Awards last year.

Poultry Farmer of the Year finalists

The Farmers Weekly judging team visited each of the finalists for a three-hour interview and tour of their systems. The judges praised St Ewe in particular for their:

  • Family business feel, despite significant expansion

  • Ambitious expansion targets

  • Commitment to local community

  • Willingness to innovate

Good luck St Ewe!

Martin Humphrey, Sales Director for Humphrey Feeds & Pullets Feeds Team, praises St Ewe’s focus on quality differentiated eggs and the importance of consistent feed.
